Statement on President Obama's FY2011 Basic Education Budget The undersigned members of the Basic Education Coalition express our gratitude to President Obama for his fiscal year 2011 International Affairs budget request. This funding proposal makes significant investments in a number of critical international development and humanitarian assistance programs, notably on global health and food security. We are, however, disappointed by the President's request for international basic education programs, which reflects a reducation of more than $80 million from the currently appropriated level. Any such reduction would be particularly unfortunate given the positive statements from this administration regarding the importance of supporting economic and leadership opportunities for women and girls, which lie at the heart of our investment in basic education. We believe it is now more important than ever that the United States maintain its strong commitment to, and investment in, basic education programs. Read full statement. Basic Education Coalition Calls for a U.S. Global Education Initiative Significant action is required if the world is to realize the global objective of Education for All by 2015. President Obama has committed to erasing the global primary education gap by 2015 and has called for a $2 billion Global Education Fund, while both the Administration and the U.S. Congress have given high priority to quality basic education programs. The Basic Education Coalition (BEC) believes that an opportunity now exists to help move the strong U.S. commitment to basic education forward. In our paper, "A U.S. Global Education Initiative: Accelerating Progress Towards Education for All," BEC's members present their best thinking on how the U.S. might seize the current opportunity for collaborative global leadership in quality basic education assistance. Our paper sets forth specific objectives and implementing recommendations for a more effective and integrated approach for planning and implementing these crucial programs around the world.
