BEC’s Statement Regarding Trump’s Budget Cuts

March 1, 2017

The Basic Education Coalition, Washington’s leading global basic education advocacy organization, applauds members of Congress, such as Senate Majority Leader McConnell (R-KY), Senate Minority Whip Durbin (D-IL), House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Royce (R-CA), House Appropriations Committee Ranking Member Lowey (D-NY), and Senate Foreign Relations Committee Member Senator Rubio (R-FL), for their recent statements expressing support for continued investment to US development and humanitarian assistance programs in response to President Trump’s shocking cuts to the State Department and USAID.

BEC Co-chairs Dan Stoner (Save the Children) and Jerrold Keilson (American Institutes for Research) commend these statements, adding, “While we remain concerned by the President’s proposed cuts, we welcome strong bipartisan statements from Congressional leaders in support of the State Department and USAID. Basic education is a critical component of US diplomatic, development and humanitarian efforts. It does more than provide children with literacy, numeracy and critical thinking skills – it is a cost effective powerful determinant of sustainable economic growth that provides the foundation for democracy, political stability and supports positive health and nutrition outcomes. The US government has long been a leader on the global stage ensuring that children around the world gain access to the tools they need to be productive members of society.    We are confident that the US Congress will not shirk from responsible leadership, especially at this time where so many children are left out of education and learning.”
