2010 – The World Bank – What Did You Do All Day? Maternal Education and Child Outcomes
Female education levels are very low in many developing countries. Does maternal education have a causal impact on children’s educational outcomes even at these very low levels of education? This paper is able to demonstrate a link between maternal education and time spent by their children on educational activities outside school. This extra effort put in by the mothers, children and households seems to pays off as test scores are significantly higher for children whose mothers have some education. Simultaneously, the low educational achievement of mothers in this sample does not lead to greater enrollment and does not affect the school choice decision. The findings in this paper emphasize the role of parental-child interaction and child effort in studying as an important channel for improving learning.
